The Tragedy of Cole Groth: A Wake-Up Call on Infant Circumcision Harm
Earlier this year the father of a newborn boy in the United States announced that his son had suffered catastrophic life threatening complications following a circumcision at New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital.
It is clear by the father’s statement that he did not feel that the hospital staff appropriately informed him of the risks – especially as he was born with a congenital heart condition (increasing the risk of complication) at the NY Hostpital. This has prompted the question – wonder why an earth was a non-essential, invasive circumcision considered to be an appropriate course of action.

The case of Cole Groth has shocked families, medical professionals, and human rights advocates. This is yet another case of inappropriate policies, and ignorance around complications on circumcision. The profit incentive for mass circumcision in the USA has been identified by other advocates of medical reformation in the past.
Born on 31 March 2025 with a congenital heart condition, Cole was recovering from cardiac surgery in the New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital.
This irreversible and medically unnecessary cosmetic procedure led to catastrophic complications. Few parents consider the significant risks of severe blood loss. Few realise that circumcision can lead to severe surgical risks – critical blood loss, loss of the penis, buried penis, organ damage, critical brain injury, and a litany of more minor but lifelong risks. All parents ought to be informed of the ways in which circumcision can be harmful to infants.
It appears that the father of the infant in this case considers this incident to be the result of a major institutional failure and a disturbing example of how circumcision practices and standards can endanger vulnerable babies in the United States and around the world.
Cole Groth’s Story: A Preventable Medical Crisis
The following timeline of events follows the testimony of the parents.
Despite his high-risk condition, Cole’s parents were called late at night on 14 April and asked for consent to proceed with a circumcision before the infant’s discharge. The father agreed under the impression that this was a standard, safe procedure. Just one hour later, a Nurse Practitioner carried out the circumcision.
Cole began to bleed immediately and continued to do so throughout the night, suffering from immense blood loss. By morning, he was in critical condition. His liver, intestines, and brain were all severely affected. The family indicated that they had not been properly informed of these risks. The medical challenges faced by the infant made this situation worse – most medical professionals would not prioritise a circumcision in this situation.
Infant Circumcision Harm: A Global Concern
What happened to Cole Groth is not an isolated incident. It’s part of a systemic problem: routine infant circumcision, often presented as harmless or cosmetic, is still widely promoted in U.S. hospitals despite the fact that no medical association in the world recommends it.
New data from Intact America reveals that new mothers are asked up to eight times to give proxy consent to circumcision, with little to no accurate information provided to the parents. As this is a profitable extra that the hospitals provide, the question arises as to whether doctors are soliciting more as sales representatives rather than essential healthcare providers. The result is widespread infant circumcision harm, often justified under flawed interpretations of consent and cultural normalisation.

Consent obtained without full disclosure is not valid. Proxy consent for non-therapeutic procedures with lifelong consequences, surgical risk, psychological risk, and permanent functional impacts is ethically unacceptable – though the responsibility of informing parents should lie with the medical experts.

We call on all relevant medical bodies and institutions to act:
- Acknowledge the absence of informed consent in this case
- Launch an independent investigation into the events surrounding this circumcision
- Prohibit circumcision for any medically vulnerable infant, especially in NICU settings
- Reform policies that govern elective circumcisions to uninformed parents
- Reevaluate the ethical basis for routine circumcision in medical settings in line with international modern standards
Infant circumcision harm is real. Cole Groth’s story is living proof.
It is no longer acceptable to treat cosmetic genital surgery as routine. The risks are too great, the consent too often uninformed, and the outcomes—like in Cole’s case—can be devastating. This case exemplifies the surgical risks. Many cases result in further complications that are not discovered until later life. In both cases, medical professionals seem ignorant of the responsibility that they have to improve standards. We hope this case brings greater awareness to the flaws in Western healthcare.
