Reflecting on Progress
The AGM and conference event provides an opportunity to have your say. As a member’s organisation, you are all entitled to a vote in the election of trustees, in addition we will also hear the Chairman and the treasurer’s report. We hope you will attend in person or online! Let us collectively champion mental well-being and recognition, whilst breaking down the walls that have long hindered progress in this crucial area.
Following the AGM in the morning, we will be hosting a mini conference afterwards with presentations from David Smith, our Chief Officer and Jason Metters. From new initiatives, exciting milestones, and future opportunities, we hope this event will inspire hope for future recognition of our charities work and the men that we represent. A buffet lunch will be provided to attendees as. If you are unable to attend in person, we welcome you to join in online, however, online participants are encouraged to provide their own tea and coffee!
Our Conference & AGM Guest Speakers: Shaping Perspectives
In addition to our regular presenters, we are excited to announce that we will be hosting two guest speakers, each offering their unique insights:
Neil Walbran from Health Watch Manchester
• Societally enforced reticence around healthcare for men – Why it must stop.
In the modern landscape of healthcare, there remains a pervasive challenge: the reluctance of men to engage with health services. This phenomenon is rooted in a complex interplay of historical norms, societal expectations, and contemporary pressures. Understanding these multifaceted barriers is essential in our collective endeavour to promote well-being. Neil Walbran has been working towards breaking down these barriers by understanding the reasons that men are reluctant to talk.
Leeanne Morris – Master’s Research in Circumcision Psychology
• ‘They made the cut’ – What is the impact of childhood nontherapeutic penile circumcision on mental health in adulthood.
Beyond the physical implications, it is essential to acknowledge the profound mental health impact that circumcision can have on individuals. By delving into the common themes expressed by men who are willing to voice their concerns about circumcision, we gain valuable insights into the hurdles faced by men in addressing these mental health challenges. From the loss of bodily autonomy to the impacts on self-image, Leanne will talk about her learning journey when talking with men and how we can encourage better recognition and training from mental health professionals.
The topics for discussion touch on sensitive issues pertaining to self-image and masculinity. By fostering an open dialogue, our aim is to dismantle these barriers and foster an environment of acceptance and understanding.
Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, including tea, coffee, and a buffet lunch.
Please save the date, we will soon be sending book in forms for the event. If you would like to attend in person, please book as soon as possible as spaces are limited. To book in please Email David at info@15square.org.uk
