Are facemasks important or not?
During these unprecedented times of the Covid-19 situation, face masks have become the most talked-about yet controversial topic.
The same can be said of foreskins, no one wants to talk about how much we need them, what sort of protection they provide, and getting people to understand their purpose is at times frustrating.
So when so many people are up in arms over the wearing of a face covering to protect themselves and others is it any wonder people are so unaware of just how important that vital piece of skin is?
Facemasks and foreskins why we need both right now more than ever!
The argument is that you should wear your facemask in public spaces unless you have a medical reason not to.
If we can understand this logic and agree with the reasons that inform this advice, then why is it so hard to get people to see that men/boys should remain intact with the foreskin they are born with? The foreskin provides coverage and protection of the glans, contains a tremendous collection of nerve endings, and facilitates movement during sex.
Most credible medical professionals recognise that alteration affects sensitivity. If we can agree on this, then it is easy to see that there is a potential for harm/dis-satisfaction for some men.
The argument that it should be completed early whilst the child is “too young to remember the pain” is about as reckless as someone with no exemption and no mask.
Circumcision should only be performed if it absolutely medically necessary, and the patient should be fully informed on all options available and making their choice as a consenting adult. We all agree that children cannot consent to such life-altering surgery, so why must we continue along this path?
Why is a facemask like a foreskin?
While the UK government waited until the 24th of July to make face masks mandatory in shops, to help slow the spread of Corona Virus, we have to wonder will it ever be time to keep our boys safe, and leave them as nature intended.
For men who have been circumcised, there are some things that you can do to help regain some of what has been lost. While we must be clear there is no way currently to fully reverse a circumcision, foreskin restoration is a topic that is close to our hearts. As the world opens back up and routine surgeries start to happen again, we want once again to demand that if a circumcision is to take place,
- The procedure is documented,
- It is performed by properly qualified surgeons,
- It should take place in a sterile suitable environment with anaesthesia,
- Any and ALL effects of the procedure are documented to a reporting body.
We have pressed this point many times to the General Medical Council. Once we document the procedure, evidence of harm will appear naturally. We would all rather see no person suffer the effects of unnecessary circumcision. We know there is a long way to go, but we will be there every step of the way until this harm is recognised.
We want to hold organisations to account: An example of this was highlighted over the weekend when NSPCC rightfully received condemnation and criticism over their stance on circumcisions.
We have offered to work with the NSPCC time and again over the inequality of their policies in order to protect children from trauma. Every time they either do not reply or send out information that they then refuse to publish, why is that if they are so confident in their position?
Why can we all not work towards a world where all children are protected from ALL harm, and every person is given the choice over what happens to their own genitalia? We believe in genital autonomy for ALL!
