Feeling Hot?
Right now it’s mid July – generally the hottest month in England, and this year is proving to be the hottest on record. But while most the country have been clinging to the shade to avoid this heatwave, one of our members has instead dedicated his time to participating in a fun run to raise money for 15 Square.
Steffan decided he wanted to raise money by running in a 5k race this month, but with the novel twist of being dressed in a full size banana costume. Needless to say, a rubber foam outfit will have done little to help stay cool!
We are not only grateful for Steffan’s dedication, but also very impressed as the heat was not the only hurdle to overcome. Steffan has suffered with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome too, making his achievement all the more admirable as he powered through with his challenge!
Steffan said:
“No-one else dressed up for the run, so it made me stand out a bit, much to the amusement of the crowd. This was almost a metaphor for how some men are treated in high school when their classmates single them out for being circumcised, though many of them didn’t know why I was dressed in the outfit. Needless to say I did contact the organisers at the end to raise awareness about 15 Square and the nature of the charity. Nevertheless, it was great to get towards the end, and hear everyone shouting ‘Come one banana man!’ as my family welcomed me towards the finish!”
We love the fact that Steffan has turned the banana into a fun “in joke” for us here at 15 Square. We often see the banana advertising circumcision with the end removed… It really is everywhere. Steffan has helped us reclaim this visual metaphor by racing in his stylish outfit. Dapper!
Whilst we sat here in the shade with our fans on full blast, we are reminded to feel grateful and humbled that one of our members has taken this initiative for a good cause. Steffan, thank you so much for your friendship to our charity, and for being part of the 15 Square community.
