Keele University & 15 Square – Cultivating Talent

Last week 15 Square were over the moon to be shortlisted for a second time for the Breaking the Mould Award hosted by Keele University

Our category was for cultivating talent. As many of our members are aware, we take a pro-active approach to raising awareness of our charity, our members, and the people that we support. We believe that educating the next generation of medical professionals can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare.

This year we went one step further by focusing on the student experience entirely. Once they had been introduced to our subject they were given total freedom to choose an aspect of our work that intrigued them the most, and to go into detail on that area. The students were encouraged to refer to what they have learned at Keele Medical School, and this helped 15 Square learn more about the medical ethics and ideas that are taught to future professionals.

This new approach was very successful. Students were in the drivers seat of their own projects, and support was given to them to create a professional standard deep dive into the area that they were exploring. In doing so, this helped our team learn from them as they brought their expertise to our charity. This was a real win-win, a value that 15 Square always aim to achieve!

We are also delighted to announce that one of the placement students has won an award for his dedication and effort during his time with 15 Square. We would like to thank Ben Bishop for taking such an interest in our work, and for contributing above and beyond expectations. Now that’s win-win! It’s great to see Ben get the recognition that he well and truly deserves.

Secondly, we were host to an intern who assisted our accountant at 15 Square, and whilst we thought we would be showing him the ropes and training him, it was not long before he was teaching us new things! This shows the value in matching the right role to the right person and has encouraged us to ensure that our role specifications and demands are bespoke to the interests and skills of those who fulfill them.

Finally, our apprentice MBA placement student has continued to receive great value from his time between 15 Square and Keele University. It is great to see his ever-expanding expertise being applied to our organisation and we are glad to be able provide a place to put these skills to good use. This has helped revolutionise the way 15 Square operates, and we are proud to be growing from strength to strength.

To all of other shortlisted organisations, we wish you all the best of luck and continued success through the fantastic opportunities that Keele University cultivate! We encourage all readers to learn more about this programme and to see all of the award categories and the rest of the nominees. A huge thanks to the university for hosting the Breaking the Mould Award.
